Cocoa Tree in The Avenue Regent is one of the most happening restaurants in Ernakulam city (Kochi, Kerala). The restaurant is located on the ground floor, with industrial decor and plenty of natural light flowing in to the dining area through the glass wall. It is also stocked with interesting knick-knacks like miniature models of old biplanes, soda bottles and interesting artworks. I particularly like the prints of Bose’s Indian Barley, a take on Andy Warhol’s famous Campbell’s Soup Cans.
There is also a huge glass counter which displays fresh pastry, which this restaurant is famous for.
We ordered Chicken Parmigiana, Herb Roast Chicken and Spaghetti with Arrabbaita sauce. The dishes were served in colourful ceramic plates, the food beautifully plated.
The spaghetti with garlic, black olives, sun dried tomatoes and red chilli peppers was served with a slice of freshly baked baguette. A treat indeed!
The Herb Roasted Chicken had a succulent piece of roasted chicken with rosemary, thyme and garlic flavours. The dis was served with roasted vegetables like peppers, carrot, cauliflower and zucchini with a creamy mash and the roast gravy. Quite filling!
Probably the best dish among all was the Chicken Parmigiana. The crumb fried filet of chicken with cheese topping was served with greens and fries. The combination of fried chicken with cheese bubbling on top was undeed a delightfu lsight to the eyes. The chicken, though crumb fried had retained all its goodness and flavours. The menu said that this dish was served with Genovese Salad. Genovese is a traditional Italian dish from Liguria using potatoes, green beans and basil pesto. This hearty salad sits perfectly alongside grilled meat or chicken. But what the restaurant served me was peppers and lettuce with a dressing. Little disappointed with this.
For dessert, we had a Raspberry Cake with couple of scoops of Vanilla Ice Cream. Absolutely sinful!
Do not miss this restaurant, if you have any intention of tasting anything other than South Indian cuisine.
